I received an email from CompUSA after requesting a status update on my order since it was placed on backorder. Here's what it said:

Thank you for your recent order from CompUSA.com. Due to unanticipated demand
of the Zip Internal CD-RW Drive (#xxxxxxx) you ordered, we are experiencing
overwhelming demand. Because of the product shortage this has created,
shipment of your order may be delayed, with an expected arrival time
of 3-4 weeks.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. If at any time you wish
to cancel your order, please visit us on-line at

http://www.compusa.com/contact/contact.asp?type=cancel

or call us at 1-800-653-3831. Any delay in the shipment of your order
will not affect the $30 Mfr. Mail-In Rebate. All rebates will be honored,
even after the expiration date.

Thank you for your patience. We look forward to serving you again in the
near future!

I got the same email. It also mentioned that any order of multiple units would be changed to quantity 1 due to limited availability.

took my original confirmation and the new email to B&M where the shelf was full and they gave it to me there. I had to pay local sales tax from the B&M but I walked out with three unit - enough to complete my buildouts.

WHOA! Stop the presses. Monopoly...are you saying that you took your internet-site receipt (i.e. back ordered) to the B&M store and they gave you a drive?

So some of you actually took the print outs to your local store and got it there? What else happens? They go and cancel your web order am I right? Will they refund the shipping? Since I already payed tax, I shouldn't be charged there. Can someone walk me through? Like what exactly I have to print? The order confirmation, and the order update email right? Anything else?

they simply to my old order and fullfilled it at the B&M. Basically, I presented the original order, email anouncement and I walked out the door. The CSR at desk kept the original order and email.

I took the original confirmation and the email anouncement to the CS desk and they honored them at the B&M. I got a credit back for the shipping from the original order.

Sweet Jesus! I was wondering if you could do that! Say, could someone forward me a copy of the email, since I never got it. My Email Hot-diggity! I'll try it out tomorrow and let you all know what happens.

I don't know guys. Could ruin it for us guys who have been waiting patiently to get our drives. It wouldn't be hard for compusa to figure out when they keep trying to cancel the same email addresses. It could be just the reason they need to cancel all our orders. I'm talking directly about sending copied email notifications to people who didn't get it on the deal, not legitimate order holders. I know most people wouldn't care as long as they got their drive. I haven't gotten mine (1) yet.

THE FACTS

I went to the B&M in Pittsburgh where they had some in stock. I gave them a copy of my on-line web order, a copy of the e-mail that my order was received and a copy of the back order e-mail. Then I told them that customer service said "If the item was instock at the B&M I could pick it up at the store instead of waiting." Guess what it worked. I got one for $129.99:D

The $30 rebate can be found at Iomega site.

I got it at the Monroeville store. It is now installed, updated to Plexter. Filling out the rebate.
