Honestly, I don't understand the point of it. Why can't they just run VNC and do exactly the same thing over ethernet? Why do you need the device?

I was wondering the same thing.

One problem that I have is when I want to work from home, my company will only let me connect to the network from my laptop via VPN. But VPN disables VNC. So to use my desktop keyboard/mouse I have to use a KVM and can't use VNC. I wonder if this cable would fix that because VPN wouldn't block USB...

Negative; the adapter creates a virtual network connection over USB. I'm in the same boat; standard KVM required.
