The International Olympic Committee doesn't have the authority to intervene in Russia's law banning gay propaganda and is convinced there will be no discrimination against athletes or spectators at the Winter Games in Sochi, a top Olympic official said Thursday.

Killy said the commission considered the issue carefully and in the end was fully convinced that Russia will respect the Olympic charter, which prohibits discrimination of any kind. He said the IOC had received written assurances from Russian officials there would be no discrimination

Should be interesting to see what actually happens. There is going to be a lot of scrutiny about this but I think Russia might be able to pull it off - unless they want the attention in which case I suspect we would see some 'spontaneous' and 'non-government sanctioned' protests\harassment.

I wonder if we'll see some subtle athletic protests?

Russian officials insist the law is designed to protect children

Think of the children!!!

Nothing will happen they will let it go. There will be some misguided protest by artist and athletes and some individuals. But other than that the show must go on and make money.
The mistake was making the Olympics in Russia in the first place. But IOC is corrupt and Russia made them the highest offer.

The IOC is not supposed to be political.

If the Olympics can be held in the US and China, why not Russia. It was done before.
