we went through the exact same issue that was never resolved. Sooner or later, Puppy will learn to sit next to the wire until the beeping stops (batteries die), then jump.
Not gonna happen with this model, it has a timeout mechanism (called idle timeout) that will stop beeping if the dog is within audible range, but not shocking range. After 10 seconds, if the collar doesnt get close enough to trigger a shock, it turns the audible beeps off until the dog either moves into the shock area, or goes back to the "safe zone"
.A) can I prevent the dog from walking down the driveway into the street?
Yes, its rather simple actually...you use a masonry bit to run the line across concrete, or you can run it in the seams of the driveway and put some calking over it.
B) how do I take the dog for a walk when I want to? Obviously I want the dog to know it's okay to go out of the yard when she's with me on a leash but not on her own.
An easy way to do this is to take the collar off him when you want to take him on a walk. The dog can learn that there is a shock present on the driveway and that under normal circumstances he should not cross..The trick is to get them to associate a leash with safe passage across the normal boundary, NOT when you take the collar off....so if you do get a system, make sure you make a big deal about how "safe" the leash is rather than making a big deal about taking the collar off.
