I need to take some control of my investments and retirement and the last couple of days I have been researching who would be best to start a account with.

I am not looking to trade stocks as I am inexperienced. I think I want to purchase some no load low expense mutual funds and try to get some diversification.

Who do you recommend?

Vanguard looks good but not sure....Any Thoughts?

Vanguard is my favorite for stock index mutual funds. If you set up accounts at vanguard.com you can get their funds without any brokerage fees. Be sure to set up electronic delivery of all paperwork to avoid management fees.

Vanguard and Fidelity are the top choices for index funds. Neither is a bad choice, but Vanguard started earlier and has been a little more consistent in their support of low fee index funds.

Search "401k" or "vanguard" for more threads in Off Topic.

as DaveSimmons said, both vanguard and fidelity are good.

vanguard mutual funds are slight cheaper (lower fees).

ironically, if you want Vanguard EFT's, it's better to go thru fidelity. Unfortunately, i dont remember why. at that time, i just xferred $ to vanguard, and didnt feel like xferring it to fidelity in so short of a time. so i never remembered the strange logic of why. i just remember vanguard eft = fidelity.

edit:
op, you might want to change the title of your thread to clarify

Vanguard mutual fund purchases are free with a vanguard.com account, but I'm guessing their Exchange Traded Funds are not. Vanguard's brokerage fees (for anything except their own mutual funds) are much higher than Scottrade and other discount brokerages.
