I want to dabble with a few stocks, and I was wondering about the experiences of AT with various online brokerages. Ameritrade? Scottrade? e-Trade?

Anyone have a favorite?

When I first started out I used Scottrade because it was cheap comissions but the site layout sucks. Now I am using E*Trade which is really good.

ive been using sharebuilder to get started. Now that I have some money in it I am planning to move to scottrade. We will see.

I use Fidelity. $100 signing bonus for $10k accounts. I'll post a link if you need. Everything seems pretty good, including the money market rates, but be sure to leave a pdf trail of everything you do on the site, as sometimes the site acts funny and a submit request that didn't seem to go through actually does. I've performed two duplicate activities already, and I've had to call in to get one reverted.

Do you need research or you have your own personal research sites/sources?

Fidelity provides good research reports but charge a good amount of commission if you don't have $50k. E Trade is the same story (trade alot with good amount in the account then you get special rate)

Scottrade is good but no longer the cheapest.

Tradeking is the cheapest if your account size is small and you just want to trade on your own research, tradeking should be your choice ($5/trade).

So if you have less then $10k to mess around, go with scottrade/tradeking. If you have more, Fidelity/ Etrade is better. Schwab is good too if you have a decent amount of money.

I like Scottrade because they have actual offices in most major cities...so you can literally do everything online and you have an office with people that can assist you whenever you need it. Of course, I have the account, just haven't sent them any money yet.....still waiting on my finances to swing in another month or so.
