Inverter problem? Backlight turns off after about two seconds of usage, consistently.

I can tell that the lcd is still displaying the image properly (strong flashlight), but how can i fix the backlight? I'm guessing the inverter is partially dead, but it physically looks ok. I just got a second monitor today that does this (very different ages and brands, different sizes too). What component on the inverter cause this misbehavior?
