Inverter function in Laptop Displays

Can someone briefly explain the funtion of the Inverter in Laptops and the effects of a failed or failing Inverter?

Well LCDs use CCFLs for their backlights and they require power inverters (even the ones that you buy to light up your case). Thats all I can think of.
