invention idea, YACT, re: kids with licenses

Why doesn't someone make some sort of tamper-proof (meaning difficult to tamper with of course) device that can be put into cars that will serve two functions:
Limit the maximum speed (i.e governor), and record driving speed, acceleration.

Don't make it mandatory to put it in cars... make it an optional add on. Even have the stuff encrypted so law enforcement couldn't use it.

The reason I'm suggesting such a device is because as a parent, I'd want to know what my sons driving habits were. Example: current thread about girl totalling new car into police car at estimated 80mph. I'd bet she wouldn't have dared to go that speed if her parents could easily find out. (or couldn't go that speed if the parents programmed the car not to allow >55 mph or something)

Even more complicated, it could record if seatbelts were worn. (well, at least fastened)
etc.

My wife wants to get my son a car when he turns 16... I'm still saying "no." Let him earn it so he knows its value.

there is a device on the market that does that..

check techtv.com or freshgear.com they had some info on it.

while recording may be a good idea if there was a speed limit placed i would definitely want it to be very high around 90-100

i have had to go 75-85 to be avoid being hit from behind before

Well i don't want a Governor on my car at all (even though most have one but set really high). But if you really want one there are ways to get one installed.

There is already a black box in most cars. it record's the speed, breaking etc. Police and insurance use it in the investigation of a crash.

But a better alternative is to have better Drivers Education. I had the opportunity to get a license at age 14 (only drive in day since my mother could not drive) but i had to take a pretty extensive drivers education class. also if i received a ticket or got into a wreck i could have lost it.

while we're at it, throw in some defensive driving classes so they don't freak when a problem comes up

yep a more extensive driving class woujld be better as well
and it should include night driving, high speed merging, breaking w/ out ABS etc.

why the heck you would need to learn how to do a 3 point turn but not merging which is far more important

Mine came with one...its called "a 5000lb ford van"
