Inventing something to make money!

So I had a great idea while sitting in the john. Why not invent something and then sell the idea! Of course this is as far as I got.

Has anyone here ever invented something and sold the design for cash and if so was it easy money?

Any tips on what I should invent as well? I was thinking something mechanical like, maybe like one of those useless things you see on infomercials like the slapchop.

Guaranteed hit if you have the sham wow guy sell it. Because he won't be able to do it all day.

Now, when I get an idea, should I make a sketch of it or just wing it and hope what I make works?

Also, how do patents work? If I patent it, cant the Chinese steal my idea and use it?

You have to patent it in every country.

I believe that in the US, the rights go to the first person who thought of it. But in other countries, the rights go to the first person to turn the papers in.

I dunno how easy it is. I once thought of a beach loveseat as an amazing idea -- a two person beachchair so you could snuggle with your sweetie at the beach or during the fourth of july fireworks on the baseball diamond.

Went home, googled. Sure enough, someone was selling it already.

Most inventions seem to just be improvements to existing inventions, etc. I actually met a guy who designed a new chess game and was selling it and he told me he invented a new type of cap for bottles that let you keep the bottle upside down -- in the 90s. He sold his invention to one company for a decent sum but in the end, most of the manufacturers just integrated the spout into the cap itself or something. the memory is foggy and it's past my bedtime, but i think you get the point.

When I was a kid I had this awesome idea (well I thought it was at the time 😛) to make a car that has an electric motor powered by a solar pannel that is inside the hood. The pannel would also power a very bright lightbulb, which would power the solar panel. To start the car you'd just have a battery temporary light up the bulb.

Then as I grew up I learned that this is perpetual motion, and that it's not possible.

I've also thought of other various ideas, some that could maybe work, but I don't have the money or resources to try them, and the oil industry would probably steal them from me anyway.

This one idea I got could totally work, but it would be hard to push it forward. Basically switch all cars to electric, have them use removable standard batteries. Instead of gas stations you'd have battery stations. You stop there, and they switch your battery with a charged one, and put your old one on the charger which would go to another customer once it's charged. The station could charge whatever fee they want. (not centrally controlled or we'd end up with same problem as gas today where some guy in islam decides the price along with the US goverment)

Basically if this idea worked we'd have near zero pollution cars (assuming they have very efficient ways to charge the batteries and recycle them once they are EOL) and we would not be using up much resources while driving (ex: not burning anything).

The key is making sure the charging stations arn't just using power from coal or gas plants, or this idea is null as far as the environment goes. Most of these stations could work with a few wind turbines, especially ones in remote areas that don't even have power.

Wind turbines are expensive but think if they'd get used more they'd go down in price.

Oh another thing I thought of, is if someone could somehow code a program that you put in ANY video file, and you get a drop down menu to convert to ANY other video file, with ZERO errors, no matter what. I would be willing to PAY cash for such program, or device.

Correct.

OP: If you invent something and want to prevent others from copying your idea, you'll likely have to patent it, and you'll need to get patent protection in every country you want it ($$ add up fast).

Then you have to either use the invention yourself to make something to sell or convince someone else that your idea is so much better that what they could come up with that they should pay you.

It ain't easy.

someone needs to develop disposable "tupperware" (think gladware) and plastic bags that change color, say from blue to red, after 5-7 days of being in the fridge, alerting people that it is time to toss the contents

then when washed with hot water they turn back to blue ready for re-use

We need:

[*]Transporters

[*]Replicators

[*]Warp drive

[*]Shields and Force Fields

[*]Anti gravity vehicles and tools

[*]Bone / tissue / muscle regenerators

Come on people! Put your thinking caps on! Let me see one of these widely used before I die.

In my freshmen year of college, I came up with an idea of a device that takes the middle man out of test taking.

This said device would just connect to your brain and it gathers the knowledge you have on a certain topic and inputs what you WOULD HAVE put down for a question.

So, let's say, you're going to take the USMLE (which is like what, a 6-8 hour test?). Now with this device, it'll take seconds because it scans your brain and puts down what you would have.

I even went as far as drawing schematics/blueprints...

Your blueprint isn't blue enough.

I uploaded a fixed version. Not only was it not blue enough, but he forgot the most important part. The device. So HA, its my idea now. I'm the first to properly document it.

better blueprint

nah man, you missed it.
The thing between the helmet and the wire that connects to the computer was the device!

*but i do like the blue you've added. Seems more functional now.

I mixed cough syrup and kool-aid and froze it, which made cough drop pops for my sick kid.

He loved it, but then they came out with them in stores like 3 weeks later :|

I've done crap like this about 4 times now...I'm afraid I'm wired and people are stealing my ideas.

Now I'm working on a self lubing fleshlight....let's see them make that!

Might be easier to come up with some kind of website that becomes popular and then you can sell it to a bigger company. All you would need is the ATOT effect for a few months...
