Introduction to Photography book?

I'll keep it short: buddy of mine (non-photographer) picked up an old digital rebel very cheaply. His birthday is coming up and I wanted to give him a book that explains the basics of photography. He's never going to be an enthusiast, but I was hoping to find a book that would help him get the most of out of the photography that he does.

What books would you guys recommend?

I have "Creative Nature and Outdoor Photography" by Brenda Tharp. It doesn't go heavily into technical jumbo, but instead talks about developing a creative vision, and learning how to express your vision thorough photography.

You can learn the technical principles like shutter speed, aperture, and ISO online for free, but having technical knowledge alone is not enough to make great photographs.

"Understanding Exposure"

great book but sometimes overrated. i had a somewhat decent understanding of exposure having done this before. I feel like I need more creativity and composition techniques.... I mean I have the Understanding Exposure book, but it seems more like I flipped through it a bit and just tossed it aside as it's mostly stuff I know already. Still great reinforcement though...

Usually I'd point him at a website or something, but I thought a book could make a nice gift. I'll check out these recommendations! Thanks guys.
