Introducing yourself to neighbors

So I'm buying a house and I guess I should introduce myself to my neighbors once I get moved in.

Whats the best way to do this? Just go door to door and say "Hi, my name is Pontifex, I moved into so and so address, I'm your new neighbor."

Also, the house is in a rural area and I want to do some target shooting on my land. Should I ask my neighbors if it's ok or just do it and see if anyone complains?

I'm not sure it would be a good idea to let strangers know I have guns on the property (afraid of theft), but I guess when I start shooting, they'll know any way.

The day we moved in to our house a neighbor next door and across the street were moving in as well. We had no choice but to meet each other. That Christmas, we handed out banana bread to all of our neighbors. Not that it matters now since half of the people have moved.

I've only actually met one of my neighbors. My wife has met them all however.

Yup, just go over, or catch them out on the road. That works well because it is the common ground.
It would have to be pretty damn rural to shoot, IMO. I would for sure talk to them to prevent any hard feelings or 911 calls.
Then again, I cherish the peace and quiet and would be pissed if somebody started blazing away in the neighborhood. Love to go shooting, but the key word there is "go" :)

aren't the neighbors supposed to be the ones to come greet and welcome the new comers?

I would never purposefully try to meet my neighbors. In fact, I avoid them.

One of our neighbors used to shoot some sort of semi-automatic rifle on Sunday mornings when my wife and I would like to enjoy morning coffee on the deck. It was annoying but we never called the cops or anything. He hasn't done that in a while...I always wondered if it was one of his teenage kids who was doing it.

It's always good to know your neighbors, you may not like them but at least you know who they are. You never know when you'll need their help for something.

I find it difficult to understand how people can live in a "neighborhood" for a decade and not really know their neighbors.

I think that when you register your new address with the authorities, they will handle the task of letting our neighbors know you are there. :p

I've been living in my neighborhood for a little over a year now, and still don't really know the neighbors too well :/ Maybe I should fix that this summer.

How big is the lot?
In some states you need to have 5+ acres or 10+acres to do target shooting in your back yard, you may want to look into legal issues before you decide to do some shooting.

As far as meeting the neighbors, I met mine a couple of days after moving in to my house. They are all good people, but they are all 5-25 years older than me with kids. (I'm not exactly a whipper snapper at 32, but GF and I have 0 kids, that said, I've dated chicks with kids before)

Just let your cows out - the neighbors will let you know that your cows are running through their cornfields.

I tried it and they ignored me. Snotty bastards.

That happened to me too :D

In fact, 3/5 neighbors won't talk to us for some reason. Not sure why...we're nice people and have had little/no contact with them to do anything upsetting.

I prefer letting things happen organically. Instead of forcing yourself on the neighbors, wait until you see them outside, and it looks like they have time to spare. It's easier for everyone that way.

Who knows. Some neighbors are just uptight snobs.

A year after moving in to our current house the wooden, white picket fence around our backyard began to show signs of rot. We decided to tear down the fence panels and replace them. This took about 4 weekends to complete ourselves.

Once we were done, we decided to let the new wood dry for a year and now we're going to paint them this year.

One of our neighbors ALWAYS brings up the fence anytime we have any interaction with him.

"Why did you tear down the fence?"
"When are you going to put up the new fence?"
"When are you going to paint the fence?"

I'm tempted to just leave it unpainted as a "fuck you" to that guy.

Well, TBH, I do live next to a funeral home.:p

CofW, they threatened to lock me up when I put up my fence. Hysterical society, FTL. Our house is just old, not historical.

I think that you should treat this much like new members treat introductions here. Show up uninvited at your neighbors door. Introduce yourself but speak with broken english or at least an accent. During the conversation talk about your hobbies; PC mechanic, webhosting for amateur strip clubs, and following your new religion Pedobearism.

you should overstay your welcome by at least a half hour to make everyone feel uncomfortable. do this to ensure your stance of dominance. bonus points are given if you get a free meal. to close you should offer your new neighbors free ipods if they check out your website.
