introducing a new dog to family...any tips?

my parents currently have a 4 year old chiuaua(chew-wa-wa), and maybe by next week or so, we will be getting a new puppy, a 6 weeks old golden retriever....

the chiuaua is rather a mean dog, barking at all strangers and all dogs. When I bring the new dog in, I dont want them to kill eachother..... what can I do?

I would rather have them play w/ eachother and not see any bloodshed.....

should we need to supervise them for the next couple of weeks? or is it ok to leave them alone(if we need to work and stuff)

Don't be surprised if the Chihuahua starts acting up... he's probably NOT going to be amused by the new arrival.

I would DEFINITELY use crates/separation when you can't supervise them. I worked as a veterinary technician for several years and this is going to be quite an adjustment for both of them. Supervise them for some time to come!

Serve the "Chew-wa-wa" up to the retriever with a nice chipotle sauce.

Seriously though, I had a Chihuahua who was about 3 years old when I introduced our Rottweiler pup into the mix. The Rott took a few lumps in the beginning, but once he learned his place she (the Chihuahua) never messed with him unless he got in her way. They actually were best friends, where she went he followed.

I miss both of them alot.
