Intra-TeAm Race <POSTPONED>

THIS CHALLENGE HAS BEEN ISSUED

I was out for all of the holiday F@H Race because my main cruncher bit the dust and it's services had to be allocated to my other computers, not leaving any spare cycles for crunching. But now, after many budget problems and being poor, I've sold some possessions and bought some new computers. Low-powered servers and a new i7 rig. Since I was unable to race, and people seem to want to dispute close stats with a rematch, here it is.

A one-on-one race of 4 weeks in a project to be chosen with both CPU and GPU clients. So post your favorite projects (like TAAndy's thread) and let's get this race set up. I'll have my new computers set up within the month so it looks like February will the the month of the race.

Racers:
PCTC2
biodoc
petrusbroder

Waiting on:
Fardringle
Assimilator1
Fullmetal Chocobo
dajeepster

Update:
Once again I have ZERO working computers except for my laptops (a C2D prone to overheating and an old Powerbook G4). So until I can get my computers back up, I think we'll have to postpone this til March. Sorry guys.

Has a race ever been done with multiple projects? That way we have to pick and chose our battles? Because I know I'm going to lose in F@H, no way around it. But I might have a chance in another, especially if ya'll are battling it out in F@H. 😀

The problem I see with multiple projects is the weighting of scores. If a single project is done, then the scores are all equally weighted, but if someone does better in one project and worse in another, how are the scores weighted?

For nostalgia's sake, we could do a SETI@home race. It has both CPU and GPU clients for BOINC.

SETI GPU is Nvidia only atm, I have an ATI card 😛.
I don't know what dispute you mean about stats, AFAIK their wasn't any 😕

Anyway I'm up for a race & I know FMC want's to get his own back 😀
I've voted SETI but actually I'd prefer to do DPAD as I've only just switched back to it after the F@H race, I think FMC has plans for me in DPAD too 😉.

February sounds good to me too as I haven't had a chance to tweak my RAM & chipset timings yet, so that would give me the time.
Atm my RAM is underclocked to 372 MHz, far from ideal 😛, but with a 372 MHz FSB it makes picking the right RAM speed tricky on this Intel chipset.

Btw let's stick to 1 project, easier to do the stats.

AFAIK, DPAD is for Windows only, which is kinda problematic for me (I run mainly Linux and Mac OS X on my fleet), as for others too probably. I'd love to, but I don't have the resources to set up my fleet as a Windows fleet ATM, or ever probably. Most of my crunchers are webservers, application servers, and other services that I have BASH scripts for, but I don't have time to port to Windows. And Cygwin isn't a compromise I want to take.

Any other ideas? As long as it's Cross-platform, I'm down. I would like a GPU to flex my muscle, but if not, I'll just run my GPUs on SETI, GPUGrid, and F@H.

So far seti is winning.

There's no way I can even challenge anyone unless it's non-BOINC, because I've got machiens that refuse to run BOINC now. Couldn't we do multiple contests? Nothing wrong with multiple winners. IE I challenge AS1 in DPAD; PCTC2, petrusbroder, etc fight it out in DC. Stats and winners will be per group, so there won't be any need to figure out DPAD to SETI conversions. Just a thought.

I'm just the opposite. I can't run anything that is not BOINC since it would take me days to manually install new client software on each of my computers...

I believe DPAD runs nicely under wine in linux according to their website anyway. Doesn't help with MacOS though.

Well, looks like we're going to have two races, but not at the same time...FMC and Assimilator: Next race will be DPAD. I promise.

But for this race, it looks like it's going to be Seti@home. We still have a few weeks to discuss this everything. But looks like BOINC.

*waves to Assimilator*

I'm still waiting for that groinal implant upgrade I was promised as a "welcome" gift from my recruiter when I joined the collective... 😀

*waves to Fardingle* 🙂

I don't know. Some windows update messed up the permissions, and now BOINC doesn't run properly on any of my servers.

So far I have:
PCTC2
petrusbroder
Fardringle

biodoc and Assimilator1, are you in?

Invite your friends.

Hmm, then windows is screwed-up, the easiest method to get a working system again is normally wipe and start clean...

The only BOINC-incompabilities I'm aware of is, 5.8.16 is last that works with win95/nt4, and none of the v6-clients works with Domain Controllers, so use v5.10.45 instead.
Also, if you're running Vista (and possibly win2008) and v5-client, it doesn't like being installed anywhere under "c:\program files". Either use v6, or, install somehwere else, example c:\boinc or something...

Is it a problem installing/uninstalling BOINC, or, just a problem running BOINC?
If install/uninstall not working as it should, it's possible using Windows installer Cleanup Utility will work...

I vote for seti@home.

if it's just between ATers, then i'll just sit on the sideline to be fair... but if it's against other teams... i'm definately in

Just between TA. Rematch of sorts from the Holiday F@H Race since I was out for a dead-ish computer. (Intra = within. Such as IntraMural sports, or sports within the school)

yeah... i didn't really read the title... just the threads... titles can be so mis-leading sometimes 😛

well... i just moved my fleet over to Aqua@home... except for my i7s.. but I can always recall the fleet at any time if i feel "threatened"

lol 😀

I'm somewhat confused by what's been posted here 😉, which project is the race in?

All these machines are working under a domain controller. And it wsa just the machines with Server based OSes that were affected. And I can't slick the machines and redo them, as that would just be too much trouble. I am pretty sure it has to do with the new version of BOINC, as the permissions are setup much differently. When I get a chance, I'll mess with them to see what is going on. But for now, they are crunching something, so I'm happy.

The race, so far, is going to be in seti@home.

I'll need to wait and see what we (TAS) pick for a project next month, but if it's one that doesn't particularly interest me, I'll run SETI for this race. 🙂

Are you running a 6.x version of BOINC? If so, that is probably the problem. From what I have read, nothing newer than 5.10.45 will run on a server OS.

I'm running 6.4.5 on Server 2008 with 32bit and 64bit with no problems that I can percieve.
