for those employed in LARGE companies (ie 10,000+ employees)

do you use any sort of bulletin board (fuse, vbb, etc) for discussion?

my mega company is stuck on email list (YES, EMAIL LIST with 500-5000 subscribers!) for world-wide special interest digests.

ive heard one reason cited against a new system is cost. which is rubbish. im not sure there is much consideration needed for hardware, maintenance, etc. im sure we have all the infrastructure and resources in places - just nobody to propose the solution

We have an extensive self-managed email list system with automatic archiving that enables search functionality, two wikis (don't ask), Sharepoint in three different flavors that include blogging and RSS feeds, and other department or team specific knowledge management technologies. It's a big bloody mess that needs to be reduced down to one or two options. I think forums would be a much better use of resources for informal exchange of tribal knowledge, while (wince) Sharepoint with content controls is actually not a bad way to manage officially produced documentation and policy.
