I will be interviewing next week for an IT job. When I talked to the HR manager he discussed what the job entails but was quick to mention that it was entry level.

Needless to say, the job didn't sound entry level. What do you think he meant by this, and if it is purely a way to hire someone for a smaller salary, what kind of salary is offered at the entry level (ie, 25% less than the experienced level?)?

This offer depends on many variables of which you've not elucidated. Where, what company, how much, and what are your skills?

Exactly. With all due respect this question is meaningless, like me coming on and saying I"m in a relationship and the other lady says "She's not happy with me right now". What does that mean? If it was a first date, that relationship is going nowhere. If we're married and I forgot to unload the dishwasher again, it takes a different meaning doesn't it?

It may mean that they already have a lot of IT employees and all these employees requested another helper who they are going to give the crappy jobs to.

I actually started my position with the title "entry-level". It allowed people in our group (business analysts) to get promotions and raises without ever changing jobs. It's hard to get a raise here without changing titles so there are 4 levels of BA's. I just got a promotion a few weeks ago but it changed nothing with my job, just allowed my boss to give me the raise. Basically it allows me to move up without being forced into a mgmt role if I choose not to take it.

Agree with slsmnaz. A lot of places use different levels to determine pay grade. Tech, Engineer, Engineer 2, Lead Engineer, Project manager etc... It seems many of the promotions happen on the operations side of things, not the tech/engineering side. I am not on the operations side lol.

it is for a network admin working for a factory w/ 300+ employees. There is only one other IT guy on staff and both report to a non-IT supervisor.

The ad called for 2-5yrs networking experience, but didn't mention anything about a degree.
