1. given a generic critical systems, give a brief description on what would you monitor, and at what threshold would you setup for it to trigger alarm?

2. If one of you box need a new patch, what is your process of installing new patches on your machine ?

actually there were 3 questions, the first one shows an event viewer screen with a couple of successfull annonymous login, and a couple of system failure audits. Explain and describe what is your action when you see these logs.

I was given a test during an interview for sys admin position, I've been doing more networking lately, so my sys admin skills are pretty rusty.

So what do you think is the best answers for these questions? I'd like to compare it with my own answer.

Thx

I wished, but it was a real interview test. I spent the first hour talking to the IT manager and the system leads, and then they hand me these papers with 3 questions on it. Told me to just write down everything I know in one hour.

1 This can very depending on the environment. You'll definitely want alerts on disk space (percentage of free disk space usually or it could be a fixed size), processor usage and page file usage. We use MOM to monitor as well as HP insight manager. Both can detect disk failures and eminite failures as well as monitor other hardware failures. Just set them up to shoot you an email when any of the traps change.

2 You install them on a test box that mimics your production environment. Then you put them on a production-test box that can be tested by actual users. Then you patch the production boxes.

I am betting they want you to be very thorough.

2. If one of you box need a new patch, what is your process of installing new patches on your machine ?

First research patch requirements and reason for installing. Then notify change management of impending patch install. Test patch on test machine.... and test for side effects...

You're right KB, I think they want the answer to be as thorough as possible. Unfortunately I think I went in for the interview with a little over confident of my self. I gave very basic answer and not very thorough in the process. I like how you answer the patch question though... that is exactly how the process goes in most places I worked, but I dont know why I didnt go into the details. Oh well 🙁
