Dudes and Dudettes-

I have been working with a company for 5 years (1 as an intern/senior in college). I am getting the feeling it is time to poke around the job market and use my experience as a stepping stone to the next level.

I am going on my first interview in 4 years tomorrow. Please tell me if I am ridiculous for these thoughts.

-I am going in with a very relaxed attitude. I have a stable full time position and I don't NEED this job.
-I am equally evaluating them as they are me. I intend to tell them if I don't see myself working there.
-I plan to only submit my job application if I chose to work there. If at the end of the interview I am liking it, I will submit it. Otherwise, why would they need all my personal/career info if I am not going to work there? (Also, I don't want them calling my references if I dont want to work there)

Above all, this is my FIRST interview in 4 years. I am using it to evaluate what is out there and gauge my worth in the market.

My question to you is am I totally out of it? Will they just look at me with disgust? (I really don't care if they do). What have you done when in a similar situation (looking around the market while at a current position)?

Thanks.

Whats is you academic & work background? Just curious...

As someone who has bombed more than his fair share of interviews, I think you have the right attitude but I hope you don't come across as c0cky or uninterested.

This is very important. Since you don't need a job, you don't want to work somewhere that doesn't fit you.

I have a BS in Computer Science from the University of Delaware. My background is mainly Oracle/Java/JSP/Web administration for a corporate application.

I am going to try and be mindful of how I am coming off. Hopefully not sound tooooo smug.:)

Don't be a jerk to them, it isn't like there aren't a million people in this country and others that can do that job. Do what you can to get an offer, even if you don't see a 100% match at the new company. Use this offer to leverage a raise or promotion at your current company. If they balk then hey, new company all set for you.

Ok, I acted professionally, but I definitely showed a little Peter Gibbons. All in all, the 2 hr interview went well. They called within about 45 min of completing the interview offering me the position.

The culture shock for me would be a cush job with a utility company vs being a contractor type with a start up.
