Interview for Desktop Support position

40K is not bad at all considering you don't have a CS degree. I started out at 37K as a developer when I graduated from college back in 97. Congrats!

Pretty much anyone on AT is qualified for that position. I'm doing tech support for dell, supporting basically the same things, and they're not too picky about who they hire. You will learn on the job.

If you can answer the phone, you can do desktop support.

I mean, if all those people in Bangalore can do it, why can't you?

I dunno, I do IT support stuff, and human interaction is a huge part of the job. I don't think half of AT could handle that 😛 I also don't get paid enough.. heh.

I appreciate everyones support. Does anyone have any advise on the negotiation? What questions I should ask? What should I expect? etc.

It's been awhile since my last job offer, so any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Congrats. Tell them you won't work for less than half of what the CIO makes. Tell them you must also get cable TV with premium access piped into your cube.

You've got to be kidding me.

Identifying an ISA network card? (not even an obscure bus, but freakin ISA?)
Basic, basic Windows networking settings? (I do more complicated stuff setting up my home network)
File permissions? (Don't even know what to say...)
SCSI termination? (Major problem, WTF?)

Come on dude. If you don't know this stuff you have no business past the first semester of a basic Information Technology curriculum.

They are offering a good salary for entry level. I would ask for 3-4K more than thay offered. It'll show you are not far away, but you're not taking their base offer. Whatever they counter with, meet in the middle, even if they hold to just below 40K it's a good salary for the position.

Congrats!

True. Tell them a 330 will do.

On a side note, where do you live? My job is help desk support, with quite a few additional responsibilities. Although I do get some ok benefits, and some really good perks, and an ok bonus structure.
