I filled out an application at Target about a week ago, and just got called in for an interview. Can anyone give me any tips, or maybe questions that they are likely to ask? Anyone here that is currently working or has worked at Target who can tell me about their interview process? Thanks.

Update: Went in this morning, interview was easy. It looks like I'm going to be doing a combination of floor and stock/inventory in the back room. The called the inventory something "puller", I guess you just scan stuff that they need and pull it off the storage shelves into those big bins for stocking. I'll learn more about it at orientation on Wednesday. Everyone that I've seen so far seemed really nice and friendly.

In my experience, having worked retail jobs, coming off as too assertive or too confident, while good for some jobs, isn't a good idea for retail jobs. They are looking for someone to do monotonous labor and not cause problems with other employees, management, or customers. You're interviewing for a position where thinking really isn't as important as doing. Definitely show that you aren't lazy but don't try to impress them with beaming confidence or assertiveness.

Target is the Devil.

<-- been working there for 3 years.

Questions they ask are, if memory serves me, what extra-curriculars you do, why youd be a good employee, what flaws do you have, whats the nicest thing youve done for somebody and some other basic information about you.

If you like irregular scheduled hours, closing every friday and saturday, and not knowing whether youll get 40 hours or 18 hour weeks, then Target is for you.

What job are you trieing to get?
My roommate works at a local Target (HR) and does most of the job placement.

Things I know she has said...

1. Bring 2 GOOD forms of ID (1 picture at least)
2. Take a shower before you go.
3. You don;t have to dress up, but tuck your shirt in your jeans and wear a belt. No ripped shirts, dirty pants, etc...

They dont really pay attention to what you wear, you could have nose rings, tatoos, be extremely overweight and theyll hire you! First thing is dont go to the interview. it is the gayest job you will ever have in your life. no kidding. After about 1-2 months of working there you will want to quit so you might as well save time and not go there at all. But if you are going to go through with the interview, they ask you why you think it would be fun to do the job your applying for, your past work experience. Just letting you know, you cant be more than 3 minutes late to your job.

  1. 1. dress neatly and appropriately. a collared shirt with slacks and shoes(not trainers) is fine. don't wear a tie.

    2. when they give you that crappy questionaire to fill out, don't be honest. nobody wants a thief or vandal working for them.

    3. take it easy, it's just an interview for target

    4. they're going to ask you questions about previous work experience and whether you're willing to do the work. just make sure to mention that you're the type of person that likes to be kept busy. also, be really polite.

    5. numbered lists add up to stupid.

Huh?
You mean like, you get fired if you're 3 mins late?

I live like 5 minutes away so that really won't be a problem.

Target is really anal about being late. You need to submit vacation 60-90 days in advance if you want it to get back to you.

As for questions, it is all really lame stuff like "if a good friend of yours was stealing, would you turn him in?".

60-90 days... wtf.

Do they post hours in advance at all, or do you just find out like the day before?

And if you are a guy, and the Team Leads are guys, you are fcked. You'll notice how simple the female co-workers have it. Thats right, Target is sexist.

Some girls CONSTANTLY come in a half hour late and nothing happens. If you are in college and this is a summer/school break job, I can almost guarantee you will get screwed out of either your 90-day raise, or your 1-year raise. My meeting to discuss my raise came in Oct. and since Im here at school i obviously couldnt go, so it gets pushed back for as long as youre on leave. THEN, you got to work that time off, which is impossible if you have to leave for college again.

They score how fast you cashier also. That wouldnt be bad except for the fact that it counts you down points while you wait for someone to write a check or dig in their purse for a credit card. They say that their workers and customers are their biggest priority. Making/Saving a buck any which way they can is really what they care about.

The only reason I am still there is because I havent found any other jobs in my area yet. As soon as I do, im going to take it in a heartbeat. The atmosphere at the store i work at is neither Fun nor Friendly.

What about getting a job at a hotel around there? Bus boy in a restraunt? There HAS to be something better, or you could do yourself a favor and move to cocoa beach :).

When I worked there in the stockroom a few years back, the department manager would make up the schedule each week. As I was a HS student, mine almost never changed.

We had to fill out a form and give it to the main office (versus our department manager). We would then get approval back at some point in the future. The earliest I ever got it back was 1 week, and most I never got back. I even went on vacation once and got back with them afterwords with them asking where the hell I was. The problem was, there was no way to check on the status of your vacation. My department manager had scheduled the vacation in, but the main office had not.

That is the official policy. The reality is far different.
