Intersted in RB/RB 2 and/or GH:WT

I'm looking at getting rock band/rock band and or gh:wt for the kids to play this christmas.

I know that the instruments are compatible across the titles. What I don't know is which set to buy.

from a pricing perspective I'd figure I'd get RB special edition at 115 @ frys or if something cheaper comes up. then buy/rent the games only version of rb 2 and gh:wt.

I honestly don't want to put out 200 bucks and have it used only a few times if the difference in experience is only marginal. I don't mind if it only gets used a few times at 115.

Enlighten me on this subject.

I would suggest getting the RB2 pack. What you can do is rent the RB1 disc only, and download all of those songs onto your hard drive for $5 and be fully playable in RB2. The instruments in RB2 are wireless where as in RB1 they are wired, and believe me having 4 instruments wired around your room is a mess.

I assume your picking this up on the 360 or PS3. If your getting the Wii set, the instruments are not compatible between titles.

Anyway I would pickup the RB2 set, and maybe the GH:WT game if you want it.

When I was reading up on them both (trying to make the same decision), I saw something about the GH:WT drums having issues with RB2, so I decided to get the RB2 Special Edition and just buy the GH:WT game.

Get the RB2 full band bundle. The GHWT guitar sucks, the RB1 guitar sucks, the RB1 drums are ok, but RB2 drums are better. And the RB2 guitar is my fav of all the guitars out.
Costco had the RB2 full band bundle for $166 or something, which is a pretty good deal since the standalone guitar + drums alone cost $160.

Is the RB2 guitar "mushy" on the strum bar? I couldn't tolerate my RB1 guitar for more than about thirty seconds.

If I'm applying your terminology ( 😛 ) correctly, it's mushy.

😕 The guitars were wireless in RB1.

Not in the big box set. In fact, I have a wired RB1 guitar _right next to me_. Replaced it with a GH wireless guitar.

really that cheap? costco near me has been selling it for only a few bucks less. figured I might as well get it on amazon to save on the tax. I'll check them out again on teh weekend maybe I looked at the wrong thing.

I was thinking of posting a similar thread. So consensus is then that the full set to buy is RB2 and just the software for the rest?

Yep.

Although listening to the OP and realizing there's a chance this'll be a play once and set it aside kinda thing for his kids, there's nothing wrong with the RB1 set too, if its saving you that much money.

If you really want to to 'try before buy' you can get a GHIII pack (comes with a guitar) for around $50 these days. It's a prefect price point. If you decide later to go the full band path you would need a second guitar anyway, so you won't waste any money and GHIII guitar is fully compatible with either RB2 or GHWT.

... no, they weren't. I bought the pack and every instrument is wired. They may have had a wireless guitar available, but I'm pretty sure RB2 is the first wireless drum set yet.
