Are VA/NC technically southern states? Yes, but in reality we have much more in common with our neighbors to the north than with those backwards yokels in the true south.

A better label is Mid-Atlantic for the tweener states.

If there were an East/West split, I would say the eastern halves would be included in this Mid-Atlantic regional philosphy. The western sides are definitely more aligned with the south.

I'd say most of VA is full blown south. The only part that isn't is Northern VA (from the DC border out towards Fairfax County).
