Interpret this cop's verbal warning

To save money (hundreds of dollars/year) and get exercise, I park far away from work. It is a 16 minute walk each direction. It currently involves going through a construction zone with signs to watch for danger and falling objects above.

When I'm lazy or in a hurry I take a shortcut that shaves 5 minutes off each direction. As a bonus, it avoids the current construction. This shortcut is down a 15' hill (on grass or on concrete), under a railroad bridge along a ditch for flood water, and back up a 15' hill (on pavers). At the top of the hill, I rejoin the sidewalk and go on my way. There are no signs for "no tresspassing" or danger or any other warning. Crude map, sorry Google's satelight image is years old and some important details are missing.

Today as I got to the top of the hill, a biker came up and says "Sir, as a future warning it isn't safe to go down there." I said "Ok, thanks" and then turned my head to see who it was. It was a cop on a bike just sitting there waiting for another person to come up the hill. He didn't ask a name or hinder me at all.

I can see danger in places like the American southwest where a flash flood can fill those drainage ditches to the brim in minutes and where there are few exits. But, for me, there are convenient exits 100' apart and it takes days to fill even in flooding weather. That really seems like a waste of a cop's time to me. Now, I do have video of me on a narrow 6" ledge under those tracks with a steep drop off into concrete. That I could see as being dangerous. I could link it if anyone can tell me how to convert a Samsung phone video (.3g2 format) to any other format.

I'm not really complaining here, as it is just a simple shortcut. But I'm just curious, is walking along a ditch an illegal thing to do? Is that a real police warning that could later be a ticket if he recognizes me again?

It used to take ~7 minutes until they added fences on either side of the railroad tracks. That forces people to take a really poorly designed sidewalk path as shown in cyan.

I'd say only illegal if you're trespassing, which I wouldn't think that you are. Could be that the cop, and rest of the police force has experience with that area regarding a high number of accidents, dangerous sketchy people hanging about selling crack....whatever. It seems like he's making a concerted effort to warn people about "something."

Could be the police are just tired of scraping bodies out from under that bridge.

curious, what prevents you from cutting across Holdredge street via N 14th? looks like an overpass on that map. Just want to walk further?

There is a bridge there over the railroad tracks (N antelope valley parkway). It would be quite convenient. Except there are "no pedestrian" signs covering the bridge. At N14th St there WAS a road as shown on Google maps. But the construction permanently took that road out and put up fences.

Yeah. Just sounds like he's saying it's dangerous and you shouldn't be down there. I don't know about the legality of it but could see a ticket given.

He's just telling you not to get run over by a train. If it's a passenger train, be very careful, as they can sneak up on you quick, otherwise, keep doing what you're doing.

ah. this post wasn't here when I was typing out my response. I'm thinking the recent construction of this fence is directly related to the cop's concern over people crossing the tracks, whatever that may be...

Sorry to be unclear, I'm going along the ditch under the tracks.

There was one man that I know of hit on those tracks. That is why people are kept off of them. I am just using the ditch under the tracks. I'll take a photo tonight and post it here tomorrow.

That was the cyan path (including two pedestrian bridges over the ditch, one WAY out of the way leading to that hitch to the north, and a pedestrian path under the tracks on the other side of the ditch). Why they didn't put it in the purple location is anybody's guess.

its under a railroad bridge... its private property, making it trespassing. as for the safety issue, if you were down there and a train went over, theres the likelihood of debris dropping on you. falling and hurting yourself is also an issue i suppose, but i know here there are all kinds of places in public youre not really allowed to go on. when younger, we would go in these areas for giggles, and cops would use that opportunity to warn us, check our IDs and try to search us and our vehicles.

Oh, I see now. Do degenerates hang out under the bridge or anything? Maybe that's why he said something. He could just be nannying you, and advising against any path that isn't expressly made for pedestrians.

Your city council members must take crack-smoking breaks in between deliberation.

Pictures may make it more understandable.

The picture on the left is from a bridge that the cop was riding/standing on. It crudely shows the sidewalk path in cyan (back bridge is not visible, so the cyan colored path appears to float in the air). The purple path is what I took today.

On the right is a picture of the tracks from the other side.

just a warning that the place is sketchy, not that you were breaking any rules.

It looks like a reasonable path to me. Be very careful on the slope protection. A bit of sand, or pea gravel under your foot, can make for a spectacular wipeout :^O
