I'm doing Computer Engineering:Electrical Engineering at Texas A&M. An engineering career fair is happening at our school next week, and a ton of different companies will be there. I'm looking forward to going and hopefully making some connections for a summer internship.

Now I was talking to an electrical engineer friend of mine and he said internships weren't usually given to freshmen. Is this true? I'm going to go no matter what, but I was wondering if anyone here has gotten any internships after their freshman year. Technically I'm a sophmore, but I'm taking all intro level stuff specific for engineering.

Also, I'm thinking of switching to computer science, should I tell the companies that I'm thinking of switching or just say I'm doing Computer Engineering?

You can definitely get an internship as a freshman, although it might be a bit tougher, since you really don't have any of the specific engineering skills at that point. Also, its usually easier to land an internship by applying for interviews with the career fair companies from your schools website, rather than going into that meat-market (the career fair).

Assuming you aren't really into your engineering courses yet, it'll be pretty tough.

Yah, I'm just taking ENGR111 which is an intro class to Electrical Engineering. I know nothing whatsoever about engineering. That's why I wasn't sure if I'd be able to get an internship. But since I'm probably going to switch to computer science, I have much more experience in that than electrical engineering. Although still not a lot. I guess it depends on the company,
