Internet

Looking at someone's laptop, A sony FS 940. WinXP Home, SP2, no spyware/virus', all drivers up to date. It has built in wireless, and has no problems finding multiple unsecured wireless connections, and connects to them. However, there is no connectivity, even though it says it is connected and has Excellent signal strength. The point isn't that I want to steal other's internet, the point is that it says it connects, but nothing works. This also happens with a wired connection. I plug in the laptop to a known working broadband connection, and it connects. Still, nothing actually works. I've tried reinstalling the drivers, Intel Pro 100 VE (wired) and Intel Pro 2200BG (wireless), didn't help. Ideas?

I'd say you've got a software firewall on that laptop thats preventing internet access. Start by removing all the security apps from the unit, disabling the windows firewall. then go back and double check that you actually removed everything and the firewall is off. Lots of people screw up this step, so make sure its clean.

then check again to see if you have access. Once you have the unit fixed you can start reloading just the security apps you need. I recommend a clean install without a lot of junk on the system.
