Internet works for a few moments, then stops

So this is a buddies computer. It was riddled with viruses and spyware, he also did not have SP2 installed yet for some crazy reason.

I booted into safe mode, ran the online TrendMicro scan. That removed the majority of viruses and spyware.

Booted back into windows, installed AVG and it removed some more viruses. Installed Ad Aware, removed more spyware. At this point, computer was pretty good. Internet was working fine. Installed SP2, and now the internet only works for maybe 30sec - 1 min before stopping. I was able to install Windows Defender before the internet stopped working.

I can still ping by name, but IE won't connect, Windows Defender and AVG can't get updates.

I tried resetting winsock, no change.

I need help!
 
How are you connecting to the internet, Cable/DSL?

Are you behind a firewall/Which Firewall are you using?

Do you have a router/wireless router?
