Internet works but not messengers

My girl is is in Japan and we have tried communicating using MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger, Skype...

And she always has a problem getting it to work, it wont connect. She has lived in 2 different places and same problem so we think its her computer not the network.

Her internet service provider says its not their problem.
She doesn't think she has any firewalls or security programs installed.

Phone bills, and phone cards suck, please HELP!

P.S. my home computer the internet works and I can log into Yahoo email, but when I click my inbox or any folder it never opens up it just hangs. I can access gmail but not yahoo email and other computer on same network doesn't have this problem.
I freakin hate networks they never work, and I am a computer scientist is the sad thing

You shouldn't post at a forum you don't like first of all....... what web browser are you using? broadband or dial up? do you have a router?

add ports that the messenger programs need to your traffic safe list
add .exe messenger file to your firewall "allow access" list
