Internet won't connect to laptop..

So my friend did a fresh install of XP, and now when he tries to connect an ethernet to his port, it won't connect at all. The network drivers are fine, and he's set up the network to be through Network connections and under Internet explorer and all..but he won't get a connection. What can be the problem?

Does he get the data from DHCP? Check the ip address, gateway, and DNS server (ipconfig) specifically. If they track MAC addresses, he may have to call them and take care of that.

And the conection is fine, when you connect the cable modem into another computer it works finely.

Have you tried power cycling the cable modem before hooking the laptop up to it? Many cable modems will only communicate with one computer at a time, based on the first MAC address it learns.
