Internet trouble

For some reason all of a sudden I can only browse certain sites, about half the ones I try don't work. I get the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" message. I tried an ad-aware scan, a system restore, turning off windows firewall. Still have the problem. Any suggestions?

I actually am having the exact same problem right now. I wonder if one of the major backbones went down, since it just started happening to me about an hour and a half ago.

There have been reports in the last year of some contractual bickering on the part of internet service providers and the owners of the cables the signals get sent on over who can use the cables to send data... some of the bickering has ended up in partial net downage of noteworthy regions across the USA. It's the biggest reason being fed to the public for why the internet needs to be governed by the USA federal government. Yay for imperalism!
But seriously though... it is a known issue, and may be a rather complex one to solve since everyone wants more than their fair share of the money ^-^

You may have a virus that infected your hosts file. Check c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts (open in notepad) and scroll to the bottom of the file. Your last entry should be 127.0.0.1 if you have other stuff in there that you didnt add, some virus got a hold of your hosts file and edited it....

Not the hosts file. Whatever the problem was, it resolved itself for me around 10:30PM last night. It was very odd.
