Internet Suddenly stops working

So I'm running XP Pro with SP2. My D-Link 614+ is connected to my RCA cable modem, and my PC and laptop are connected via ethernet cable to the router. I leave my comptuer on to go out for a bit (1hr), and when I come back, internet on the PC no longer works - I get that little network icon in my taskbar that says "Limited or no network connectivity".

So now here's the weird part: My laptop can still connect to the internet through the router when my PC cannot. (laptop running 98SE). I've tried plugging my pc into a different ethernet port on the router to no avail. But when I connect my pc directly to the cable modem, internet works (with the same cable that I use to connect it to the router).

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Edit: I've scanned pc with Norton - no viruses detected and I've run spysweeper - no adware detected.

In Device Manager, is the NIC set so Windows can turn it off to save power? Or maybe its IP lease happened to have expired just about then.

It is set so windows can turn it off, but I would still get internet connection if I simply disconnected the pc from the router and connected it directly to the cable modem.

Also, this has happened once in the past, about a week ago. And after I've tried everything I could possibly think of - nothing happened. Then it just started working again as suddenly as when it stopped working.
