I got some problem with my internet speed. I am currently using the att 39.99 plan which give 600kb download speed and for the past week the speed has been really slow and I change my netgear router to a new Linksys E3000 from costco. Speed seems to have improve for a day or 2 and then the speed drop again.

Even my EA store download is only at 20 kb atm. I want to call up att to see what's up but they always demand you to remove the router and then do a speak test which is a big hassle. And since it is a brand new router I doubt it would be a broken router issue. It seem during the event hours the dsl speed drop and it is normal to good to the morning.

My internet setup is me in the top floor of townhouse with wifi connect to 2 other computer and then a powerline adapter to bottom floor to my brother's room.

Another question, which is a good brand of router to buy from costco? I seems my router always die within 1-2 years of use and costco return policy is perfect for it. However, when I check the store, they only offer Linksys E3000 and some Belkin N router wich I have bad experience with. However, in costco online site there are more option like:

Netgear RangeMax Wireless-N Gigabit Router and
Vizio Dual-Band HD Wireless Network Internet Router

Are those better option than thew E3000

any router with 128meg
same chipset as your wifi card/usb/mini pci-e

don't use wifi -use wired. otherwise you can't isolate external 2.4ghz/5ghz interference.

if you are not doing torrents, its not the router man. esp with direct connect ethernet.

Do you have the security features (like WPA2) enabled? You might have a guy torrenting off of you and those are the hours he leaves it running. That might be why it's okay for a day or 2 and then slows down. It just takes him that long to get around to logging back into your network.

Before you mess with that you might want to log into your router and check the "attached devices" (or similar) section. It'll have a list of all of the computers that have a current IP from the router so you'll know for sure if someone is leeching.

If you use WEP, then there's someone else cracking into your router, almost guaranteed.

Switch to either WPA-PSK (AES), or WPA2-PSK (which is always AES). Choose a long passphrase. That should keep people out.

If you're sure it isn't one of your house mates downloading the whole internet, then your best bet is to play the ISPs game and plug right into the modem to force them to come out and check their connection to your house. Just be sure to push for an appointment during the period you typically experience the outage.
