I have a question.

Usually when I do a fresh install, My internet is SO FREAKING FAST. For example, I download drivers, and updates and what not after fresh install and I get around 500-600KB/s download speed. Which is pretty quick.
Now after all the updates and installing programs and a week or so later, i'm down to download at 300Kb/s max?

Why is this? why is it so much faster on fresh install of xp?

Well spyware is not the issye crispy. I've always kept my system clean from spyware and viruses. It's just that EVERYTHING IS SO MUCH faster. windows load quicker than you can double click. but over time It all slows down, Now i know its because over time you get more info on the hard driver and the seek time is increased.
What I dont understand is why is it like that with Internet? Because regardless if you keep the system free of spyware, it'll never be as fast as the begining.

I had a computer which had never been online but had windows for a few months and programs and what not, even that was slower on the same net compare to a freshly installed one.

Hope you are not comparing the speed of downloading updates to other downloads. Microsoft has lotsa bandwidth so you can download very quickly from them. I also believe that should be the same for most device drivers.

My updates from MS are always much faster than other downloads, even multiseed torrents.

i think he is talking about the general speed and low latency of a fresh install. I have done fresh installs on pIII that seem faster on the internet than my x2 4800+
nobody knows for sure the real reason for the slowdown over time. everyone has theories....but i don't think anyone REALLY knows

I believe you are correct, but didn't want to overlook the obvious. . .

Personally my theory on this is that the belief that 'things just slow down over time' is BS. A properly kept computer should be as fast as it was on the day of purchase as it is a year later. Especially with any type of internet use...

If your throughput isn't as quick, it *will* be because of one of the following:

- spyware
- hardware issues (nic/router)
- driver/firmware issues (nic)
- ISP issues
- Site issues that you're connecting to.

The notion that installing games or programs slows down the internet, or a fragmented hard-drive is crazy.

Now if a reinstall suddenly speeds everything up, I would tend to believe that the main cause is spyware. Evil elves don't just sneak around over time and slow down computers, it's due to end users installing software on their PC that they likely shouldn't be (or even know they are).

Again, that's just my theory :)

au contrarie. windows has something nasty about it, that u must have, but is so annoying. no, i am not talking about security or anything like that. DLL'S! each update u do to windows
loads more services and dlls. also, any app that loads, loads its own dll's. prob is that not all apps unload thier dll's. that's why a computer that restarted is fast. Same thing with internet.
even as i try to keep my installed apps to a minimum, and update from redmond slows down the computer and we can't do anything about it. cathch-22. U have to have it, but it makes life misrable. Again, that's just my theory

Windows updates don't load new services (excluding SP2) they update existing ones. That aside though, core os DLLs and updates will not slow down internet throughput on your PC.

For the OP to say that he is getting 500-600 on a fresh install and previously was getting 300 max is *not* due to any installed window updates. Now of course while updates are coming down the pipe, the speed will be decreased - but no longer after they're complete. This is not a theory :)
