Hey guys,

My SMC NIC keeps dropping my internet connection every 5-10 minutes. It will then immediately reconnect is the odd thing. I was wondering if there was any software/solution that could help me monitor my internet connection and what's crashing it?

Not sure when it first started happening, I think it occurred when I installed the latest version of Webroot Spysweeper (always use "Gaming Mode" option) but I've also installed a few online games as well. The problem occurs when I'm playing an online MMORPG and just boots me. It will also occur when I'm just surfing the web normally as well. It never did that before so it's odd. I have already re-installed the latest drivers for my SMC NIC so not sure what else I can do? I also ran full antivirus and spyware checks that say everything is clean. Any help would be appreciated.

Software:
OS: Windows XP Pro v5.1 SP3
Antivirus/Spyware/Firewall: Webroot Internet Security Essentials

Hardware:
NIC: SMCWPCI-G
Mobo: Gigabyte EP45 UD3P
CPU: Intel Q6600
Vidcard: EVGA Nvidia 9800GT
Ram: Corsair Dominator 2X4GB
Power Supply: PC Power and Cooling Silencer 750W

Thanks again!

Who is your ISP? Could it be the result of throttling? On-line gaming may hit your bandwidth limit if you do a lot of it.

If the "internet" light on the modem goes out then the problem is likely with the modem or ISP. Keep an eye on the modem lights during a drop.

Hey guys, thanks for your responses... what ended up happening was there was a conflict between the windows network connection manager and the NIC software. For whatever reason, after I disabled the SMC NIC software on startup and deferred to the Windows manager it worked. It also solved my problem of signal dropping out. I'm guessing that it was caused by windows update, because I reinstalled the SMC software 5 times but couldn't get it to work. Strange, but glad it's fixed.
