Well, first off you can start off by going here http://www.practicallynetworked.com This will give you the basic information, including netbeui info.

About sharing your connection, you can get a router. Connect both machines to it, and they will share the connection. The other idea is to add a second NIC in your win2k box, and run a cable to the laptop. If you did this, you would probably use ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) which is included with win2k.

Another solution to share your connection is dig up an old 486 (or above, just some old PC lying around your house which you dont use anymore), and configure linux on it to share the connection...

There are also some linux distos out there that are designed to act as a router...

This way you dont need to spend money to buy a hardware router, and dont have to tie up one of your PC to act as server...

to network the 2 PCs u only need a reversed wire (forget what it is called but probably the site given to u by RC5Bri would have a diagram of how to crimp such a wire. but for internet sharing I have 4 computers and a barricade router on cable and I bought the smc network cards cheeply and all is working fine I am sharing the internet with all 4 computers web browsing is super fast on all 4 simultaneously. I have not yet had a chance to download on several computers at the same time and see how it goes, just installed it all day b4 yeaterday and the 4th one yesterday.

One more solution is using external software like Sygate, Wingate theres more but I can't recall it. Personally I have problems with this external software, they sometime don't work at all.
