I'm stumped...
Have a MaxGate UGate 3200P router here sharing my Rogers High Speed Internet cable connection.
It crapped out on me, again, about a month ago.
Took it to a friend's place to check it out, worked perfectly fine, no problems at all. He's got similar machines too, a 2k and a 98SE, whereas I have an XP and 98SE.
My problem is this...
I can peer-to-peer the two computers with no problems at all, transfer files etc, but no internet what so ever.
When I plug my computer directly into the cable modem, again, no problems. Called up tech support to check up on my modem/connection, and they too said the connection is perfect, and most likely it's either the router or that I have some tinkering to do with my settings.
So guys, any ideas?
It just went kapoot overnight I think. Working fine one day, then nothing when I woke up the next morning.

Can you access the configuration of the router?
Check that it is getting an IP address and DNS entries from your ISP.

Yes and no.
I can access the config page, and can input all the relative addresses myself.
But I believe I have to set it to auto detect or DHCP for it to work properly, cause the last time I had connection problems putting it to DHCP fixed it.
I don't think it's getting anything from my ISP though, cause when I release the router and try to renew, it will time out.

If I were you I would just input the setting manually, get the Ip address of the router (the internal one) and input it as gateway, then use that ip for your computers ip except change the last digit to something different, and do this for your other computer as well, also input the DNS information from your router's config page into your TCP/IP settings for your network adapter.

Certain segments of the Rogers network requires you use the same MAC address of your network card for security reasons. If your router is not picking up an IP from Rogers, then one of two things. The aforementioned issue, or their DHCP server is down (which is rare these days).

Best to contact Rogers support, and ask them if they can punt your current MAC address, plug in your router, and then let Rogers pick up the new MAC address from your router.

Anytime you change MAC addresses (change network cards, or add a router), you will not receive anything from Rogers DHCP because your modem is programmed on Rogers' end to only give out IPs for the MAC address they currently have on record on their servers.

Or you could pick up one of the newer Linksys routers which allow you to spoof a MAC address.

I just set one up at home.... thank god for that feature, otherwise who knows how long it would take me to get through to the cable company and have them make the change.

I'm absolutely amazed that they haven't cut your service for using a router.

I had Win2k set up running Sharing and within 8 hours, my net was down and when I called them they bitched me out because no software or hardware of a server nature is allowed on any system or network hooked up to theirs.
