Forgive me if this top is posted somewhere, but after searching for a few hours, I haven't found anything that relates to this particular question.

I have two computers networked, and recently got DSL. The company set up the DSL but they only set up one computer, and it's up to me to connect to the other.

My problem is that if I hook up the network, using the DI-704 D-Link router the network works just fine. If I plug in the DSL modem, none of it works anymore. I can run DSL to either computer separately by unplugging the network cable from the DSL modem and plugging in the other computer. Of course this means that I can either have the network up and running, but no DSL on either computer, or I can have no network, and only one computer at a time with DSL. Can anyone help me figure out the problem here.
Our set up is as follows:
Both computers have win98se.
Network cards are:
Computer 1 [ 3Com EtherLink XL TPC 10Mb Ethernet NIC (3C900B-TPC)
Network Card MAC Address: 00:50:04:80:07:76 ] and
Computer 2 [Winbond W89c940 PCI Ethernet Adapter
Network Card MAC Address: 48:54:E8:26:45:ED ]
Router : D-Link Model DI-704

I'd really appreciate any comments since I've tried everything I know. I have a degree in microcomputer support tech, but this obviously is a prob that I can't figure out.
Thanks. Compdoc

The following may apply:

Most DSL services use PPPOE for authentication ( Id, and Password).

In such a case when first installed the software includes a PPPOE program (usually WinPOET), during the installation the Id and Password will appear on screen. When every thing work well, and you have a solid Internet service. You can put on the Cable/DSL Router.

You log on to the Router, in the PPPOE menu type username and password. Make sure PPPOE is checked. Set the router to obtain IP automatically (unless you have a static account).

PPPOE is installed as a form of DialUp connection. If you want to use the Router you have to change the connection option in the Internet Browser (I.E) pull down Internet Option in I.E, and choose LAN as the default connection for the Internet. Doing so will connect through the Router, and will ignore the Dial PPPOE.

As long as you don't switch off the DSL Modem, and the Router you are connected "forever" (the computer can be switched off). If you switch them off, when you switch them on again, it will take a minute, and the Router will automatically connect to the DSL ISP.

You can uninstall WinPOET and whatever else, the ISP dished you.

The Router's PPPOE capacity is independent from the Computer, and it keeps the connection alive.

Working through the Router in a DSL, connection should yield faster smoother Internet connection (it is estimated that the PPPOE software creates a 5-10% reduction in the speed of the connection).

I've done a search on my computer for PPPOE and WinPOET, and come up with nothing for either. When the guy was here to set up the DSL, he did not install any software on either computer. At that time, I only had a hub and he couldn't make it work together, so he recommended that I buy a router and just hook it up. Occasionally we will need to use the WinIPconfig to release and renew, when we switch the dsl from one computer to the other, but nothing else. BTW.... this DSL modem doesn't have an on/off switch at all. The only way to shut it off is to turn off the computer or unplug the cables to it. Have I misunderstood something, or is this a different problem than you thought?
Thanks....

As I wrote in the beginning of my post, it may apply to you. It is hard to guess what is the type of installation in every computer that is out there.

Did the installer bring with him t he Network cards for your computers?

Try to find out what is the nature of your connection:

Pull down the Tools, Internet Options, in the Browser, click on the connection tab, and see what type of connection it says.

Open the Network settings in Control Panel, and see what is installed there.

Do you have one IP two IPs, or Dynamic IP?

Whooohoooo!! I got them both going online at same time, and network too. With what you told me, I got to checking things, and although tools-->options--->connections was pretty much empty except that we use a lan connection. But... I did the WinIPConfig for both computers and realized that the IP's didn't match... Hubby's computer had somehow switched from Ethernet adapter to PPP. So... I connected the router back up. Made sure hubby's puter was set for Ethernet and not PPP.. release all, renew all, ok.. then came back to my computer and repeated the process. Guess I just needed the nudge in the right direction, and everything including network and dsl to both computers online at same time. Thanks a million for your help!!
