internet server from lan-- help

I live in apartment which shares multiple t1 lines throughout all the bedrooms. My ip address is shown as 10.2.1.230 when I look at ipconfig. How would I go about setting up a server that is accessible from the internet? Is this possible? I don't have plans no setting up a pr0n server or anything, but I'd like to host a shoutcast server or maybe a private FTP so I can transfer stuff with my family.

isn't a 10.x.x.x address private? if so, that means you'll have to tell the routing computer to do some port-forwarding to your computer (if they even let you do that).

yes, i realize i have a private address, and I do not have access to the configuration settings at the router or whatever they have. if i go to whatsmyip.com , it says my ip is 204.x.x.x

You're going to have to get some ports forwarded through that router, otherwise the connection's not going to know where to go once it hits your outside IP. Private IPs aren't routeable... so the only way to do it is tell the router where to send the connections once they hit that outside barrier.

i think you're stuck. i do the same thing with my dsl connection. i have an internal network on 192.168.x.x. the router just routes http requests to my computer on the internal network

You MAY, I repeat MAY, be able to get www.sytes.net to work , but I highly doubt it.

I have a friend who runs the Sytes.net client on a server behind a Firewall/Router like yours & it works.

The advantage of SYTES.net is that the client you run is able to tell the Public Address (Network Address) instead of using your local client address.

He has:

Router/Firewall--> Public Address
WWW Server--> Private Address

The Sytes.net client runs on the WWW Server, and he is able to get to it via <his name>.sytes.net.
