Internet Sales TAX???

I heard on the news tonight that "the powers that be" are considering passing a state to state internet sales tax. Crap, I sure hope not. I dunno if this is just an AR thing, wouldn't suprise me with how backwards this damn state is, but that's just another tax for us to pay, and I think it's BS

If I'm smart enough, or patient enough to get a good deal online, and some store around here sells it for 10x more, then why should I be punished?

Damn that would suck. I always buy out of state for hardware to avoid taxes... it's wroth the extra shipping time to me.

legally you're obliged to pay the tax already, you're just commiting tax evasion by not doing so. the only difference is that businesses would have to start collecting the sales tax, which they currently do not.

I'm thinking FS forums, I dunno if you could get around it that way or not, I guess it would hit Ebay too. I think businesses are freaking out, and of course the power that be want to get every damn dollar they can get, any way they can.

Linkage

so, whats the big deal? you'll be forced to pay the taxes you've supposed to have been paying in the past?

Would you be paying the sales tax for the state that the online store is located in or the state you are located in ?

If the former, I think you'll see a bunch of online stores move to Oregon or wherever there's no sales tax

How will this go though? If it's based on where the buisness is located, then they'll likely move to a place with no sales tax(higher property/income tax mind you, but people pay attention to sales taxes). If it's the location of the buyer, then it might be worth it to live in a no-tax state.😉

Ouch. That would suck. I hope none of my reps would be stupid enouth to vote for that. I would make sure they are not re-elected.

I don't see how a State can force a business from another state to collect sales tax for them ..

If I go to a store in another state (or even call them and order something to my house) I dont pay sales tax for my state ..
The internet is the same thing.

This might go to the Supreme Court for appeal if it passes.

You have it all wrong. If you call a state and order something to your house, you are already legally required to send the state sales tax to your state. The problem is most people "forget" to do this. Thus the vast majority of people are breaking the law with every online/catalog purchase. This isn't going to make any new tax at all, since you are already supposed to pay it.

The reason we have this problem is that your state cannot force another state to collect it, but a state CAN AND DOES require its own residents to pay the tax on all purchases (in state or out of state). However a state can agree to collect taxes for another state, it just cannot be forced to do so. I'm assuming what you heard on the news was an agreement.

Connecticut had that tax for a while. On your state tax return form there's an entry where you list all the items that you purchased (including online) from another states. Then you pay 6% state sales tax on the sum.

Well put.

If that was the case then every single person in the country is breaking the law. This whole internet tax thing has been going on for years. It gets no where and when someone thinks they have something it gets shot down. You are correct in that there is no way to enforce the law. Thats why its impossible for something like that to work.

Nope not everyone. I did a poll on this a bit earlier. I'm too lazy to search, but a few percent answered they do pay their taxes. Depending on your state there is a form you must fill out yearly, or a line on your state tax papers that you list all your purchases that you didn't pay tax on. Thus when you sign that tax form you are risking an audit and possible fines/jail time. Those things are in your tax forms for a reason.

It is impossible to enforce the way things are now. But why shouldn't we make a simple change to enforce it better? If we are unwilling to do that, then at least change the tax laws so that those of us who obey the law aren't paying more than the rest of you.
