Internet really slow when downloading

Have no real idea why this is happening but when I am downloading something using bittorrent my internet connection is really slow for doing other things. It is not that I am using all the bandwidth as it is equally slow when downloading at 5K/s as it is at 40k/s.

The connection is 1Mb/s so I should be able to atleast browse at a reasonable speed while downloading shouldn't I?

Also it does not do this with any other downloads (ie. when downloading a file using firefox) just bittorrent.

Any ideas?

Bittorrent isn't all it's cracked up to be, never has been. I had same issues. I'll never use bittorrent again, always download faster with direct downloads anyway.

try another bit-torrent client. alot of them are memory hogs, never heard of them slowing down your whole connection when it's only using 5K. what type of connection you on? sounds like satelite if it's 1mbps. i'm just assuming of course. you do realize if it is, satelite only lets you have like 50 tcp connections open at time or something like that. it's on direcpc's website. bit-torrent opens up a whole bunch of connections to people. you get segments of files from everyone connected trying to get what you're getting.

i'm just saying all this assuming you're on satelite of course. hope it helps though.

Tried a wide selection (bittornado, Bitlord, Azureus and shareaza) all give me the same problem.

The connection is cable (1Mbps/256Kbps) and I have the upload speed throttled so that it is not the problem.

Running windows XP pro and have a gig of ram so not sure it is the memory issue (right now commit charge in task manager is 165MB so that leaves plenty free)

are you forwarding the ports that your bit-torrent client is using? doubt that'll have any affect on browsing, but it should speed up your downloading with bit-torrent.
