internet randomly disconnects

I have roadrunner. whenever I use the router our internet randomly disconnects. AOL brings up the "attempting to reconnect" screen then it reconnects itself pretty quickly.

it is a netgear router. the problem goes away whenever I directly connect to the cable modem. the problem with the router happens whether i'm directly connected to the router with an ethernet cable or if i'm using my wireless card.

i'm not sure what's causing the problem. is this common with netgear routers? can I change something in the router firmware? is it nearby phones on the same frequency?

Try a different frequency for starters and also a different firmware if there is one available. If that fails, the rouer is junk.

Does it appear that the router is restarting when the connection drops (based on the lights on the front)?

Might also want to check if there is a firmware update available for your router.
