Internet Problem.

Hi everyone,

I'm having a baffling problem, at home when I try to connect to the internet (I use a modem) I usually connect successfully (my password and username are accepted by my ISP) but when I actually try to access a website, nothing happens, the browser tries to reach the url but it is never successful. I've tried a tracert and tried pinging servers but have had no success. However, when I take my laptop to work, everything works fine, I can surf great and everything is normal. This problem started on the 9th of this month, before then I had no problems accessing the Internet from home. Does anyone have any idea what might be the problem here? Have my phone lines gone screwy or something? Should I ask the phone company to check my lines or something?

Thanks for any help.

I have the same sounding problem with the ISP I am migrating from.

After you connect from home, try pinging the ISP's main and secondary DNS servers,
to see if you get a response from them. You might be connecting fine to the ISP,
but if the DNS is overloaded you will probably not be getting proper routing
to get to anything else.

Call thier service line and get the current DNS servers and phone #s. Sometimes they upgrade and just leave their existing customers to slowly migrate to the new setup.

Also if you have resently set up a LAN at home, and assigned IP numbers then you have to have the modem connected before opening the browser or it will latch onto the current IP and not switch to the modem assigned one.

Thanks for the help guys,🙂 I'll try your suggestions out when I get home this evening. However I don't think its a DNS problem. Why? Well I had a friend over last night and we tried his ISP to see if I?d get the same problem. The result was the same; we connected to the ISP but couldn't surf.

Topochicho: I don't have a LAN set up at home (but the laptop is set up so I just have to plug in to access the network at work though). And I have tried connecting and then launching the browser, but with no success. 🙁

Does anyone know if its possible for the phone company to somehow disable a specific persons ability to surf by doing something to the telephone line? (I know that sounds kinda crazy)🙂 I ask this because there has been some controversy with my phone company, they claim that people "overuse" their service (even though I pay for unlimited use). I was just wondering if they could do something to the lines to prevent me from surfing. In addition to trying your suggestions, I?m also going to take the laptop over to my neighbor?s house to see if I have the same problem there.

Any more suggestions? Ideas? Thanks for the help so far 🙂
