internet problem

I have 2 computers here. On this computer, I can connect to the internet fine (through my cable modem), but when I try to connect with my other computer, it says "invalid IP address", and wont connect. Both have the exact same TCP settings and whatnot (all on automatically detect), but the other one just won't connect. Is there some random setting or something I'm not getting? Please help me out, I've tried everything I know!! THanks.

i don't see anywhere where you said you had a router. a cable modem will only allow one PC to connect. you can setup the pc closest to the router as a internet connection sharing machine, but i don't like that.
