I just got done clearing the HD on my wife's old laptop and she was using the internet no problem, then I went into task manager and turned off a process, and since then, no internet...so I restarted the computer, right? Still no internet...so i turn off windows firewall, still no internet...this is the thing...

I'm on the same internet connection, it's working fine (obviously). When I open up her internet connections it shows data sent and received (like 10k each). When I got to msdos prompt and run ipconfig, everything shows up. When I pingip (enter IP address) in msdos prompt i have 100% success (no data loss).

What gives? I tried turning down internet security options, nothing...like I said it was working just fine then it just stopped...I wish I could remember what it was that I hit when it stopped, but it wasn't a system process, it was a user process (i know that much) and when I shut down and reboot, I'd think it'd turn back on.

How do i get this thing back up and running. it's not the provider as I'm using it, so it's that specific laptop, but i'm out of ideas.

Thanks a lot.

John

Try a System Restore back to before the problem happened. Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. Any good?

tried that, the internet is working, but now she's getting a shell32.dll error whenever I try to open the HD icon in my computer or any of the icons in control panel.

I'm trying to figure out how to correct this, but she doesn't have a floppy drive on the laptop so we can't boot into dos or anything like that as far as i'm aware to reinstall the shell32, but even if i could, i doubt i'm capable of doing it without someone walking me through it.

Not to just go straight for the lowbrow approach or anything, but would a clean Windows installation be an option?

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns

Edit:
Doh, just saw the other post. Repair the windows install?

...*coughs*...how exactly?...*coughs*...everything is in Japanese and my wife is about as good at translating as I am at cooking :( John+cooking=No

also I don't believe this computer has an actual windows CD, it's something that came with the computer but I'm scared to see if it's really a restore disk or a bloat disk
