On my main comp my internet just stopped working after I woke up this morning. I was on the phone with comcast tech support for over 3 hours and nothing got resolved. Comcast said the modem pings just fine and everything is working on their end so its something messed up with my windows. (Actually I'm typing this on my other PC so I know the modem and connection are fine) I'm not the most computer savvy person but I know may way around enough to fix simple things. The main problem is whenever I tried to hit 'repair connection' it would just sit there and after a few minutes it said it couldn't repair it. I tried uninstalling and re-installing my network card (nvidia onboard) which didn't work either. Cable is fine since I'm running the PC i'm typing on through the same connection, I just moved the box and connected it through all the same stuff my main was connected to. The only thing I can think of is windows did an automatic update last night while I was sleeping and now its not working. Could a windows update do something? This happens alot, where my connection just randomly stops working. But I usually just restart my comp and/or cable modem. I'm at my last straw and am about to reinstall windows completely although I'd rather not if I can get to the bottom of this. Its probably a really easy fix for you guys but I'm just at my wits end here. My system is as follows:

Winxp pro
Chaintech VNF4 Ultra
Athlon 3000+ x64
1gig ram
Radeon x800
3 Maxtor 120gigs

Start > Run > type "cmd" (without the quotes) > Enter

Type "ipconfig /all" (without the quotes) and hit the Enter key.

You should have two blocks of data;

Windows IP Configuration

and

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Under the latter, what is the IP Address to the right of Default Gateway?

Report back.

With Comcast, if you have a router, it is normal tohave to power it down and have it re-seek the IP about once every 10 days or so.

When I can't connect - that's the first thing I do - unplug the router for a couple of seconds - plug it back in and away we go.

The reason I posted what I did above, is that I have a computer I built several years ago for my wife's niece sitting next to me right now with the exact same troubles you describe.

The onboard NIC on the motherboard is dead. I disabled it in the BIOS and installed a PCI NIC and it's online once again.

The OB NIC showed fine in Device Manager. Uninstalled and reinstalled, with drivers found and the whole nine yards, but doing an inpconfig /all shows no Default Gateway.
