Internet makes the computer hang.

Hi,
I have 2 computers, one has a modem, winXP, whenever i connect to the Internet THEN open the IE THEN try to open a web-site the computer hangs, the other computer has a modem, that works fine under Win98, has WinXP but the modem is not defined there (i didn't pay the effort to do it and don't want to 😀), anyway, it has also a network card, whenever i open winXP it hangs after a while, the whole network has DSL which is working on that computer, if i remove the card winXP works fine, Win98 works fine with or without the LAN card.

can u help me please, thanks.

another question please ... there's a computer that give me an access denied when i try to connect to it from outside (i mean access it to browse from a LAN), for example if i write \\TEST then enter it gives me this error, but if i type \\TEST\TESTFOLDER, i can access the folder and its contents, TESTFOLDER is a shared folder on this computer, so the problem is in the root share or something, cause everything shared is accessable provided that i write the full address (i think the problem is in the $IPC, right?).

Try adding the username that you have on computer 1 on TEST as an admin and see if that helps.

I don't understand your configuration, what are you doing with 2 modems if you have DSL? and why do you have one LAN card?

_Please_ tell me you don't have win98 connected directly to the internet with file sharing turned on... the only windows that is safe to connect to the internet is XP-SP2 with firewall. If you are not infested with viruses it is only because the kid who now owns your machine is protecting it so it can send more spam.

will try what u suggested, thanks.

the configuration is simple, computer 1:

connected to the internet through my LAN using WindowsXP with a Network Card set to a gateway (my computer, which is working good with no problems), it's problem is that if i connect the network cable the computer hangs either instantly or after a while, especially when browsing, i tried changing its place.

computer 2:

has a modem (Dial-Up), has nothing to do with my LAN, it's at my friend's, when he connects to the internet the computer hangs if he opens the IE, other than that it can work for a long time, it only hangs if he opens IE while connected to the Internet.

Thanks for your replies.
