Internet keeps crapping out during big file d/l's, could be my router or no?

Sorry, couldn't get any feedback in the hardware forum...I dl large files almost daily at home, np's whatsoever. At school I have to use a Netgear RP614 router with the latest firmware and the thing craps out on me almost always after 150 mb's or so. Does anyone know what could be causing this? I never get disconnected unless I do a large file download.

Sometimes it can even be your ISP. Charter does something called port throttling which is a limit on how fast a port can receive information, therefore limiting the bandwidth of certain file sharing programs. There might be a similar situation with your ISP. But more likely I would think it might be who you are downloading from. When you say the connection craps out, is the whole internet connection fragged? Or is it just your download?

The whole internet conn dies. I'm using Roadrunner since i live off campus. I'd call time warner, but they wont help cause it's a router hookup. Nope, not a wireless router.

check ur roadrunner network status at help.rr.com

dunno about ur side, but san diego has had quite a few problems with the internet. mine's been down for two weeks, even though i use earthlink. time warner told me to check at roadrunner's status page for updates.

roadrunner in san diego currently has two areas in "red" and has been that way for awhile.

I download 700-800mb files daily when I'm home.

Acutally been running it straight for like 2 weeks while i was home earlier.

It's probably your router. I use a Linksys rebadge and i have no problems with large files.

I have RR/Earthlink cable.

I have the same problem with my Netgear MR814 wireless broadband router. Every so often when I'm downloading from a newsgroup my entire internet connection will just drop out for like 15 seconds, and then it'll come back on by itself. Lately it was doing it so often that i just ended up disconnecting the router. This has apparently eliminated the problem, but i'd sure like to know what exactly about the router causes an internet connection to crap out like this.

i have RR at home and i dont have this prob with my linksys router. i can Dl libux ISOs and such just fine. im curious to know what it is. and i called RR when i had probs with my router and they helped me

a couple of my clients have had that Netgear Rp614 router and have had nothing but problems with it. i've RMA'd several of them.

it could be that particular router because netgear in general is comparable to linksys for most of their other products.

have you even tried to take the router out of the picture and see if the problem continues???

Must be too much Pr0n..j/k
Check if your modem/router heating up...I am using a Speedstream DSL modem and heats up a lot and the connection dies.

Do you think maybe if i install the modem software (surfboard modem) that it might fix it? And no, it's not heating up =[
