i have a h/w firewall and use s/w firewalls on all my PCs, except the mac (haven't found a free d/l yet)

how do i know when someone has broken into my network and what can i do (with in reason) to ensure that my network is secure?

also i'm planing to add at wireless access point to my router for a wireless bridge to my notebook

what security measures should i look for in a wireless product?

the a protocol is out right? and b is in right? can't remember the number now

thanks

WEP for 802.11b was broken a while ago. Im not sure if that is what you were asking about, but I dont know if 802.11a equipment has been released...

As far as security, you can run a HIDS (tripwire) on the Windows machines, and maybe AIDE on the Mac (Mac OS X may work). If you are using Mac OS X it has IPFW installed by default and you can set that up. A NIDS would be a good idea too. Look into snort on a UNIX-like OS (*BSD preferably, they dont seem to be big fans of Linux :p). That will definitely help a lot.

We all do. It doesnt help that the field (security especially) can do a 180 tomorrow.
