Internet hangs

EDIT: Oops thought I was in Tech Support Section. Someone please move this if need be. Thx

Recently I had the great idea to tweak my computer.

Made changes to the Registry, a few safe changes, and changed a lot of Services that were running.

Since then Internet service hangs, and sometimes even disconnects randomly. Although its rare that it disconnects.

Before I made the changes to the Services I did not have this problem.

I'm running WinXP and a DSL modem with dynamic IP provided by my ISP. (this is not an ISP issue so they will not help at all and Microsoft support is too vague regarding this)

I followed this site for advice on changing settings:

http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/service411.htm

I also found a couple of spyware running in startup that I have since turned off but it made no difference. I also ran Ad-Aware but all it found was tracking cookies which I deleted. I also cleared temp internet files and ran Norton Anti Virus with up to date definitions and found nothing.

When Internet hangs, the whole computer halts all network traffic completely. My computer does not receive or send ANY packets.

I have ran the Windows Update as well but that didn't help.

I also turned off the DSL modem and the computer and turned them both back on. It seemed to make little to no difference.

It seems random at this point.

Sometimes network traffic halts every 5 seconds for 30 seconds or sometimes it works fine for 5 minutes then all of a sudden it halts for 30 seconds or so then it works for a bit then stops again sometime after that.

Its really annoying. Short of turning on every single service on my computer I'm not quite sure how to solve this

I'm gona list all the services I have set to either "Disabled" "Manual" or "Automatic". Hopefully someone who tweaks these settings and uses DSL can tell me if he/she sees anything wrong.

Note: I don't use wireless nor firewall of anykind at the moment but I do have my admin and guest account password protected under WinXP.

I had something similar happen after tweaking my services according to blackviper's page, although it could just be coincidence. I'm behind a DSL modem / router, and updating its firmware worked for me.

I'm not behind a router.

I don't think I can update my DSL modem but I'll poke around to see if its possible to update its firmware. Somehow I doubt that.

Ahh the router is built into my modem.... I'm just reading about it.

Apperantly it even has a webpage and its own DHCP server etc.

This is way more complicated then I first thought.

At least I found the rest button on the modem. Nicely hidden too (in plain sight).

Gona see if after this reset it did anything.

EDIT: Apperantly each ISP has their own firmware upgrades. Good thing I didn't download any yet.... still testing to see if this reset helped.

EDIT: Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Gurck.

DSL connection seemed very solid after the reset of the modem/router with a ballpoint pen.

Went ahead and disabled a half dozen other services I previously turned on in an attempt to get my connection working again.

Again reset the modem/router right when the computer rebooted and connection still seems solid.

There is one service I'm running, can't figure out which, that hangs my system just as I hit the desktop.

Its looking for something but I can't figure out what.

Eventually it hits the floppy drive, I can hear it trying to read it, and then it gives up and I can finally use my Start Menu without it hanging.

Its very odd.

I'm not sure which service it is. Previously when I first turned about 20 different services off this problem went away and instead it took about 3 seconds for my computer to allow me into the Start Menu and it didn't try to read my floppy drive.

Anyone has a clue whats trying to read my floppy and hanging my system aprox 60 seconds?

I'll Post the process' that have been started:

COM+ Event System - Manual - Started
Cryptographic Services - Automatic - Started
DHCP Client - Automatic - Started
DNS Client - Automatic - Started
Event Log - Automatic - Started
Network Connectsion - Automatic - Started
Norton AntiVirus Auto Protect Service - Automatic - Started

QoS RSVP - Automatic (this service did not start even though its on Automatic)
Remote Access Connection Manager - Manual - Started
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) - Automatic - Started
System Event Notification - Automatic - Started
TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper - Automatic - Started (is this even needed for DSL through Dynamic DHCP?)
Telephony - Automatic - Started
Windows Audio - Automatic - Started
Windows Management Instrumentation - Automatic - Started
Workstation - Automatic - Started

Just dont disable the event log :( I did it once and couldnt figure out why half of my services wouldnt start. Its not listed as having any dependencies but it royally messed up Win2k Server Sp4

For a server yeah but you don't need it on a standalone system as far as I know, either way I have it running.

Everything is tied to it on a server. If anything screws up on a server the only way you gona figure it out is by looking at the Event Log and with good reason. Everything and its daddy reports to it in W2k Server.

Or so I'm told. =p

Edit: I have a sneaking suspision that its the TCP/IP Helper service... gona can it and see what happens.

Edit: Well it wasn't the TCP/IP Helper service. After disabling it nothing different occured and my connection still seems solid so obviously my system didn't need it running. Thats a plus but its still reading the floppy after 60 seconds after I get into the desktop... hmm....

Edit: Ok disabled QoS RSVP and Telephony services... gona see what happens next. Lol

Well it looks like Telephony service is a requirement of the Speedstream DSL modem line.

As for QoS RSVP.. it looks like disabling it makes the DSL service once again act like its choaking and about to die.

Looks like I'll have to turn that one back on too tho it makes little sense as it didn't even start the process. Gona put it to Manual and see if that will keep it off my back.

Anyway currently with that one service disabled DSL service is unstable.

Also disabling either one these services didn't do anything to get rid of the annoying 60 sec hanging of the system at desktop.

Edit: After the reboot with QoS internet is again seemingly solid... hmmm what could it be....

I found whats hitting my system at bootup. With so many services disabled only one loads after bootup and gives a healthy 16% CPU usage when I hear the drive grind after 60 seconds.

Its called NAVASVC.exe

It is a backdoor program.

Say hello to a hacker... and say goodbye to one too.

*waves goodbye to the prick*

Gona slam a door on this hack's rear.
