Internet Freezes when I turn on XBOX. Have router and hub

I basically, have a modem going to a 1 port router then to a 5 port hub and then 2 connections. One to pc and other to xbox. Now if the computer is on and im using internet or whenever and i turn on my xbox, my pc internet connection stops. Wont load pages or anything until i reboot. I have found i basically have to turn on my xbox before i start my comp for both to work or reboot after i turn on xbox. Any info would be great. BTW, i have ****** box and am able to ftp into it no problem without reboot but internet doesnt work.
 
If you're using a Hub instead of a small switch it is possible the Xbox type traffic may seem like a Broadcast storm.
Try a $35 D-Link DSS-5+ 5 Port or similar switch and see what happens.
 
I'm not sure about this, but to me it sounds like the Xbox is trying to take the same IP the PC is arleady using ...
 
Exactly - You can only use a hub if your provider provides more than one IP. With one IP, the xbox will grab that one IP which is also currently allocated to the pc, and this is a no no.

Just get a SOHO router so that both XBox and PC can share the single IP assigned by your ISP. The router will give them separate internal IP addresses so they can both use Internet and be able to ftp back and forth.

I'd be careful about saying you have a modded XBox in this forum... One of the goodie-two-shoes around here is likely to turn your butt into Microsoft. hehe...

My dumb ass missed where you said you already had a 1 port router. Sorry. Well, you can go into the web based management software for the router and be sure that you see both the PC and the XBox are assigned different IP's. You can see that under the DHCP clients list. I'm assuming that model has the option.

Some ISP's not only give out one IP addy, but restrict it to MAC address also. Many routers will let you enter a MAC address for it to emulate. Maybe that's what they are doing???
