I have a Diamond Multmedia Home Network with 3 computers operating through a cable ISP. My computer is the portal an I replaced an older (satellite) one recently for one of my sons.

He inherited this computer when grandpa moved out of town. I reformatted the PowerSpec 233mhz Cyrix with Cyrix mobo after adding a LAN card, second HD, CDRW and more memory (total: 160mb) I got the Cyrix drivers from the internet (Micro Center wanted $60 to install them. They were not provided with the original purchase).

Computer, Diamond Mutimedia Home Network are fine. I get onto my cable ISP with no difficulty. Within seconds of downloading e-mail or files the computer freezes and the other two computers are off line. With reboot of main and PowerSpec we're online again and back to square one.

Where is the problem?

What software are you using on your "portal" machine to do your connection sharing?? It sounds like your portal machine doesn't like what's coming in or out, and going bye bye. Do you have an internal or external cable modem?? If you have an external modem, then I would suggest you get a cable/dsl router, and relieve your portal machine of those duties. The routers are more robust, and can be left on all the time, so maintenance on your portal machine doesn't have to affect all other lan users.

"Home Free" networking software was provided by Diamond Multimedia and worked well on this three computer network until I replaced an older one with PowerSpec. We all operate with Win98SE.

Cable modem is external and portal computer is on 24/7.

I appreciate comment about a router since I hear thundering footsteps and howls from my kids upstairs whenever I reboot; when I'm down I drag everyone down.

Problem is that this system uses telephone cable and I'll have to rewire if I use a router (correct me if I'm wrong)
